Abstract

The aim of this research is to test the effect of vocabulary mastery and grammar towards writing ability in English. It is also tested the moderating effect of reading ability in strengthening or weakening those relations. This research uses test as research instrument. The sample is Management students semester 4 and 6. Descriptive analysis towards each variable is used to see students’ ability in English, especially in those four variables. To analyze the effect of independent variables towards dependent variable, it uses linear regression analysis, while to analyze moderator effect uses moderated regression analysis. With this research result, it is proved that vocabulary has positive significant effect towards writing skill. Grammar does not have significant effect towards writing skill. Reading skill moderates the relation of vocabulary towards writing skill. Reading skill is proved that it does not moderate grammar with writing skill and it even becomes direct factor that influences writing skill. With several limitations in this research, further research is expected can make perfect this research and can describe the real condition so that it can give better suggestion to the technique of English teaching and learning.
