Abstract

The city of Palembang is one of the cities that produce a relatively high amount of waste. The main reason for the increasing amount of produced waste is society’s culture of consumerism and hedonism. Since there’s no place to process the waste, The City of Palembang needs a public place to accommodate educational and recreational activities which are based on waste recycling, such as The Trash Art Gallery. Palembang’s Trash Art Gallery aims to reduce the amount of waste that increases daily. A single-mass building that includes the main function, management function, support function, and service function with various facilities, such as public areas, park areas, seminar halls, auction halls, cafeteria, and souvenir store. Palembang’s Trash Art Gallery will be built in an area close to landfills, near the Tanjung Api-api area. The theme applied is recycling, which interpreted as the process of turning waste into something useful. The use of this theme is adjusted to the function of the building containing various activities that focused on processing waste into works of art. This theme is embodied in a building based on the concept of the Tikar Purun Pedamaran, which is one of South Sumatera’s cultures designated as Indonesian cultural heritage and designed using an analogous approach.
