Abstract
Background: One of the common reasons adolescents smoke is having smoker parents, because children tend to imitate the habit shown by the parents daily at home, and the insensity of cigarette smoke exposure inhale directly or indirectly causes the adolescents to suffer from acute respiratory infections. In Palembang, survey from the Central Bureau of Statistic has shown that the prevalence of smoking adolescents are at 25,7%. Aim: This study aimed to comprehend the correlation between smoking parents and smoking occurrences and acute respiratory infection among adolescents in grade VII & VIII in PGRI Junior High School Palembang. Method: This study used the survey analytic method with cross sectional design. The population consisted of 97 students, with 54 students using total sampling tecnique. The instrument of study used was questionnaires. The statistic test used was Chi Square. Result: The result pf the survey found that 44 parent-respondents (81,5%) were in the smoker category, and 10 parent-respondents (18,5%) were in the non-smoker category. Smoking occurrence found 21 respondents (38,9%) smoked and 33 respondents (61,1%) did not smoke. Acute Respiratory Infection report include 38 respondents (70,4%) infected and 16 respondents (29,6%) did not suffer from infection. The Chi Square testing result found no correlation between smoker parents and the Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) cases among adolescents with p value=0,284 and there was a correlation between smoker parents and the Acute Respiratory Infection cases among adolescents wit p value=0,001. Therefore, it is expected that parents do not smoke in front of or near their children when they are at home so they do not see or become exposed to the cigarette smoke from their parents.
