Abstract
Background: Self-control is the ability of individuals to control behavior, thoughts, and decisions in using gadgets. Low self-control can increase the intensity of gadget use which has the potential to cause various negative impacts on adolescents, such as disruption of rest time, eye health disorders, obesity, and nutritional problems. Objective: To find out the relationship between self-control and the intensity of gadget use in adolescents in Palembang City. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The research sample amounted to 126 adolescents who were selected using the proportionate random sampling technique. Data were collected using a self-control questionnaire and a questionnaire on the intensity of gadget use. Data analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate using the Kendall's Tau-b test. The exclusion criterion for the study is respondents who do not fill out or do not complete all the statements on the questionnaire. Results: Respondents with moderate self-control were 67 (53.2%) respondents, 45 (35.7%) respondents, and low 14 (11.1%) respondents. The intensity of use of high-category gadgets was 86 (68.3%) respondents and 40 (31.7%) respondents. The analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between self-control and the intensity of gadget use (p-value = 0.001; p < 0.05) and the correlation coefficient (τ = 0.393), indicating a moderate relationship strength. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between self-control and the intensity of gadget use in adolescents in Palembang City. Suggestion: Further research is expected to provide interventions to improve self-control and reduce the intensity of gadget use. The school is expected to collaborate with health institutions to organize seminars, counseling, and education on self-control and the use of healthy and wise gadgets.
