Abstract

Background Diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN) is one of the most common chronic complications of diabetes mellitus caused by chronic hyperglycemia, leading to peripheral nerve damage and increasing the risk of diabetic foot ulcers, infection, and amputation. Diabetic foot exercise is a non- pharmacological nursing intervention that has been shown to help control blood glucose levels and improve peripheral nerve function. Objective : To analyze the implementation of nursing care using diabetic foot exercise therapy on diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy and blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods : This study employed a case study design involving three patients with diabetes mellitus who received evidence-based nursing care foot exercise. Random blood glucose was measured using a glucometer, while DSPN was assessed using the Neuropathy Symptom Score (NSS) and Neuropathy Disability Score (NDS). The diabetic foot exercise intervention was carried out according to the standard operating procedure for six sessions. Result All participants presented with nursing diagnoses of unstable blood glucose levels, risk for peripheral neurovascular dysfunction, and deficient knowledge regarding a healthy lifestyle. After six intervention sessions, the average random blood glucose level decreased by 12.8%, and the DSPN status of all participants improved from positive DSPN to negative DSPN. Conclusion: The nursing problems were partially resolved. However, diabetic foot exercise was effective in improving blood glucose control and peripheral neuropathy, making it a useful nursing intervention for managing unstable blood glucose levels and reducing the risk of peripheral neurovascular dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus. Suggestion : Nurses are encouraged to implement diabetic foot exercise as a nursing intervention to help manage unstable blood glucose levels and reduce the risk of peripheral neurovascular dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus.
