Abstract
Background: Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases and remains a major global health problem due to its increasing prevalence and its role as a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney failure, and premature mortality. Hypertension is often referred to as a silent killer because most affected individuals do not experience specific symptoms, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Blood pressure can be controlled through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is Isometric Handgrip Exercise (IHE), a static muscle contraction exercise using a handgrip device that may improve vascular function, reduce sympathetic nervous system activity, and help lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Objectives: To apply Isometric Handgrip Exercise to blood pressure management in patients with hypertension. Method: This study used a case study approach based on Evidence-Based Nursing Practice (EBNP) involving three hypertensive. Isometric Handgrip Exercise was administered once daily for three consecutive days with a duration of 14 minutes per session. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention using a sphygmomanometer. Results: After three consecutive days of intervention, all participants experienced a reduction in blood pressure. Mrs. E's blood pressure decreased from 130/90 mmHg to 120/90 mmHg, Mrs. H's blood pressure decreased from 150/100 mmHg to 130/80 mmHg, and Mrs. S's blood pressure decreased from 148/80 mmHg to 140/80 mmHg. Participants also reported feeling more relaxed and experiencing reduced hand stiffness Conclusion: The application of Isometric Handgrip Exercise may help reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension and can be used as a simple, safe, and practical non-pharmacological nursing intervention.
