Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that requires long-term management. Patients often experience stress, including uncontrolled blood glucose levels, which can affect the quality of life of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The number of DM patients has increased both globally and in Indonesia. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the relationship between stress and blood glucose levels with the quality of life of DM patients. Objective: To determine the relationship between stress and blood glucose levels with the quality of life of DM patients. . Methods: This study used a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of DM patients who met the inclusion criteria and were selected using a total sampling technique. Stress levels were measured using the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS) questionnaire, blood glucose levels were obtained through blood glucose examinations, and quality of life was measured using the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL) questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using the Kendall tau-b statistical test. . Results: Univariate analysis showed that the majority of respondents were late adults (68.7%), female (62.6%), had basic education (45.5%), had suffered from DM for 1–5 years (56.6%), experienced little or no stress (36.4%), had diabetic blood glucose levels (46.5%), and had a high quality of life (99.0%). Bivariate analysis also showed that the majority of respondents experienced little or no stress (36.4%) and had diabetic blood glucose levels (46.5%). The results indicated that there was no significant relationship between stress and the quality of life of DM patients (p-value = 0.896 ≥ α = 0.05). Blood glucose levels also did not show a significant relationship with the quality of life of DM patients. Suggestion: Nurses are expected to provide education and nursing interventions focused on stress management and blood glucose control in order to improve the quality of life of DM patients.
