Abstract

. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease characterized by airflow limitation and excessive secretion production, leading to the nursing problem of ineffective airway clearance in Emergency Department (ED) patients. This study aims to describe the implementation of the Active Cycle of Breathing Techniques (ACBT) in improving airway clearance among COPD patients at the Emergency Department of Charitas Hospital Palembang. The method employed is a case study with a nursing care approach, utilizing data collected through nursing assessments, observations, interviews, and medical documentation. The nursing intervention focused on the application of the ACBT technique, which includes breathing control, thoracic expansion exercises, and the forced expiration technique (huffing), combined with effective coughing. The results of the implementation showed a significant improvement in the patient's airway clearance, characterized by an increased ability to cough effectively, a reduction in the amount of secretions, decreased shortness of breath, more stable respiratory rates, and a reduction in adventitious breath sounds. Based on these findings, the ACBT technique is recommended to be routinely implemented as an independent nursing intervention and as educational material for patients and families in their efforts to maintain airway clearance sustainably.
