Abstract

Background: Preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing general anesthesia is characterized by increased vital signs and frequent concerns regarding the duration of surgery, postoperative pain, and potential complications. This condition may interfere with the intraoperative process. One non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety is deep breathing relaxation techniques. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of deep breathing relaxation techniques in reducing the level of anxiety in preoperative patients undergoing general anesthesia. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest–posttest control group design. Data were collected using purposive sampling. Samples of 66 respondents pre-operatively with general anesthesia, 33 in the intervention group and 33 in the control group Anxiety levels were measured using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). The intervention group received deep breathing relaxation, while the control group received no intervention. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann–Whitney U Test. Results: The majority of respondents in the intervention group were 36 years old, while the control group had a mean age of 37.8 years. Most respondents were female, accounting for 69.7% in the intervention group and 57.6% in the control group. Regarding surgical history, 21 respondents (63.6%) in the intervention group had no previous surgical experience, whereas 21 respondents (63.6%) in the control group had a history of surgery. Before the intervention, severe anxiety was reported in 84.8% of the intervention group and 57.6% of the control group. After the intervention, anxiety levels in the intervention group decreased to moderate anxiety in 74.7% of respondents, while severe anxiety remained predominant in the control group (51.5%). The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the intervention in the intervention group (p < 0.001), while no significant difference was found in the control group (p = 0.407). The Mann–Whitney U Test revealed a significant difference in post-intervention anxiety levels between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Deep breathing relaxation intervention is effective in reducing anxiety levels in preoperative patients undergoing general anesthesia. Suggestion: Nurses are expected to implement deep breathing relaxation techniques as part of preoperative nursing care.
