Abstract

Background: Menstrual cycle disorders are reproductive health problems commonly experienced by adolescent girls and can have long-term impacts on reproductive health and quality of life. A crucial issue among adolescent girls is irregular menstrual cycles, which are influenced by various lifestyle factors, such as fast food consumption habits, stress levels, nutritional status measured by body mass index, and waist circumference. High consumption of fast food that is rich in fat and low in fiber, as well as excessive stress, can disrupt the balance of reproductive hormones. Objective: To determine the relationship between fast food consumption habits, stres levels, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference with the menstrual cycle in middle and upper class adolescents in Palembang. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted at SMA Methodist 4 Talang Kelapa involving 62 female students selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to assess fast food consumption, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to measure stress levels, measurements of body mass index and waist circumference, and a menstrual cycle questionnaire. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analyses using Kendall’s tau-b. Result : Significant relationships were found between: fast food consumption and menstrual cycle (τ = 0.357; p = 0.004) stres levels and menstrual cycle (τ = 0.372; p = 0.003) No significant relationships were found between BMI and menstrual cycle (τ = 0.068; p = 0.589) waist circumference and menstrual cycle (τ = 0.054; p = 0.672). Conclusion: Fast food consumption and stress levels were significantly associated with menstrual cycle patterns, whereas body mass index and waist circumference showed no significant association. Suggestion: Adolescents are advised to maintain a healthy diet and manage stress to support regular menstrual cycles. Key Words: Fast Food, Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference, Stress, Menstrual Cycle
