Abstract
Background: Diabetic foot ulcers are a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that increase the risk of infection and amputation, highlighting the importance of early prevention. Purpose: To determine the relationship between knowledge of diabetic foot ulcers and foot care behavior with the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This quantitative study used a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The independent variables were knowledge of diabetic foot ulcers and foot care behavior, while the dependent variable was the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers. A total of 54 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and a diabetic foot ulcer observation checklist. Data analysis was performed using the Kendall’s Tau test. Results: Of the 54 respondents, 66.7% had good knowledge, 81.5% demonstrated good foot care behavior, and 81.5% did not experience diabetic foot ulcers. Bivariate analysis showed no significant relationship between knowledge and the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers (p = 0.73). Similarly, there was no significant relationship between foot care behavior and the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers (p = 0.30). Conclusion: There is no relationship between diabetic ulcer knowledge and the incidence of diabetic ulcers, nor between foot care behavior and the incidence of diabetic ulcers.. Suggestion: Future studies are recommended to examine other factors related to diabetic foot ulcers and to conduct research in community settings.
