Abstract

Background: Packed Red Cells (PRC) are blood components obtained after most of the plasma has been separated from whole blood. PRC can be stored at a temperature of 2-6 °C until the expiration date is ± 30 days. The activity of the Na+/K+ATPase pump is strongly influenced by temperature. The pump becomes inactive at 4 °C, causing potassium leakage into the plasma due to the failure of the Na+/K+ATPase pump, this process occurs slowly and continuously so that the potassium level in the PRC plasma increases with increasing storage time. Hyperkalemia is the most common complication of stored blood transfusion. Objective: To determine the difference in PRC potassium levels in 3 days and 10 days storage in the Siti Khadijah Islamic Hospital Palembang’s Blood Bank. Methods: This research is a quantitative research with analytical observational method with a time series research design. Potassium levels were checked using the ion selective electrode indirect (ISE indirect) method. The research subjects used in this study were PRC blood component hoses stored in the Blood Bank of Siti Khadijah Islamic Hospital Palembang for 3 days and 10 days as many as 28 bags that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of potassium examination in stored PRC were analyzed by paired T test with 95% confidence level. Results: The average potassium level of PRC on the 3rd day of storage was 4.25 mmol/L and on the 10th day of storage it had an average plasma potassium yield of 11.027 mmol/L. Conclusion: There is a difference in the results of the PRC examination stored on day 3 and day 10 with a value of (sig 2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. Suggestion: Further research should be conducted on other parameters that change during PRC storage such as ATP and pH levels, as well as research on patient plasma potassium levels before and after PRC transfusion according to the length of storage in the Hospital Blood Bank.
