Abstract
Breastfeeding is a process naturally by mothers after giving birth. The success of breastfeeding can be influenced by proper and correct training and assistance to the mother. Some factors that can affect the breastfeeding process are the assistance of health workers and the level of maternal knowledge in the breastfeeding process. One fact shows as many as 40% of mothers do not breastfeed their babies because they feel pain when breastfeeding and swelling in the breast. The percentage of babies receiving exclusive breastfeeding in 2018 in Indonesia is 65.16%, while in Palembang, it is 60.43%. The percentage of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia, especially in Palembang, has not yet reached the target set by the Government of Indonesia, which is as much as 90%. This study aims to explore the experience of a midwife in assisting primiparous mothers in breastfeeding. This research method uses qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, amounting to 4 participants. In-depth interviews obtained data obtained in this study in all four samples. The results of this study get six themes: 1) Feelings of health workers accompanying primiparous mothers in breastfeeding, 2) Perceptions of health workers towards primiparous mothers in breastfeeding, 3) Barriers to health workers in assisting primary mothers in breastfeeding. 4) Efforts in dealing with obstacles, 5) Expectations of health workers in assisting nursing mothers, 6) Nursing techniques taught by the midwife in assisting breastfeeding
