Abstract
Background : Heavy metals in rivers can have a negative impact on people who use the water such as for bathing and washing. One of the heavy metals is lead. Lead that enters the body can affect the number of platelets with an increase in megakaryocytes, so that it can be the cause of high platelet counts. Elevated blood lead can interfere with erythropoiesis by inhibiting protoporphyrin synthesis, thereby increasing the risk of anemia. One of the causes of high platelet count is due to a decrease in iron or anemia. Lead enters the body through the dermal (skin). Objective : This study aims to determine the relationship between Pb levels in the blood and the number of platelets in the coastal population of the Musi River in the city of Palembang. Methods : This research is observational. The sampling technique is purposive. The study was conducted on 17 samples that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. This research was conducted at the Central Laboratory of the Palembang Laboratory, but before the lead samples and platelet samples were examined, a method verification must be carried out first, after being declared good, the lead was examined using an ICP device and for platelets using Sysmex XS-800i. Result : The number of lead samples and platelet counts were still within normal limits. The results of the Pearson test showed that there was no relationship between blood lead levels and platelet count with 0.868 (ρ > 0.05). Conclusion : Based on this study, it can be concluded that there is no relationship between blood lead levels and platelet counts in the coastal population of the Musi River in the city of Palembang. Suggestion : The solution used by the researchers for sample preparation was HNO3 (Nitric Acid). For further researchers, they can conduct research using HCL solution for sample preparation.
