Abstract

Background: DMPA contraceptive injection which consists of progesterone hormone controls the hypothalamus to stimulate appetite and accelerate carbohydrate break down. Contraceptive pills contain progestin and estrogen which retain liquid and fat accumulation. Data In 2019, 17 (46%) of 37 DMPA acceptors gained weight. Meanwhile, 13 (65%) of 19 pill acceptors gain weight. This phenomenon motivated the researcher to conduct a study that investigated the differences in weight gain between DMPA and Pill acceptors. Objective: This study aimed to identify acceptor weight gain difference before and after using contraception: DMPA, pills in BPJS Kertapati Palembang. Methods: This type of research is quantitative study employed an analytical retrospective survey approach. It used a total sampling technique to select 74 secondary data. The data were analyzed by applying a descriptive test of frequency distribution and paired sample t-test. Result: The result showed that the dominant age range of the acceptors was between 20-30 years where 43.20% of them were DMPA acceptors and 51.40% of them were pill acceptors. The average weight gain of DMPA was 1.73 kg meanwhile the average weight gain of pill acceptors was 2.50 kg. The result of paired sample t-test revealed that the p-values of both DMPA and pill acceptors were 0.01. In short, there was a significant difference in body weight of DMPA and pill acceptors before and after using contraception. Recommendation: This study is expected to be fruitful feedbacks to health workers in educating the acceptors that both DMPA and pill acceptors impact weight gain.
