Abstract

Background: Pre-competition anxiety is a psychological condition that can affect athletes’ physiological responses. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system due to anxiety may cause an increase in blood pressure and pulse rate. A preliminary study at Kenzie Volleyball Club Palembang showed anxiety symptoms as well as increased pulse rate and blood pressure in most athletes. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between pre-competition anxiety and blood pressure and pulse rate among adolescents at Kenzie Volleyball Club Palembang. Method: This quantitative study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 28 adolescent athletes selected using total sampling. Measurements were conducted before the competition using an anxiety questionnaire, an aneroid sphygmomanometer for blood pressure, and an oximeter for pulse rate. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and Kendall’s Tau-b test. Results: A total of 14 respondents (50.0%) experienced high anxiety, 12 respondents (42.9%) experienced moderate anxiety, and 2 respondents (7.1%) experienced low anxiety. Blood pressure showed that 12 respondents (42.9%) had stage 1 hypertension, 7 respondents (25.0%) had prehypertension, and 9 respondents (32.1%) had normal blood pressure. Pulse rate showed that 14 respondents (50.0%) had normal pulse rates, 13 respondents (46.4%) had tachycardia, and 1 respondent (3.6%) had bradycardia. There was a significant relationship between anxiety and blood pressure (p=0.001; r=0.608) and between anxiety and pulse rate (p=0.000; r=0.788). Conclusion: Clubs are expected to monitor the mental and physical conditions of athletes, as well as provide motivation and emotional support prior to matches to help them manage anxiety and maintain bodily stability.
