Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that can lead to serious complications, such as stroke. Delays in stroke treatment can occur due to a lack of family knowledge regarding the early signs of a stroke. FAST is an initial assessment method that families can use to recognize a stroke attack. Education utilizing audiovisual had been proven can help improve family knowledge regarding this initial stroke assessment. Objective: To determine the difference the level of knowledge regarding early stroke assessment among families of patients with hypertension before and after receiving health education at the Social Community Health Center, Palembang. Methods: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental, one-group pre-test/post-test design. It was conducted in July 2026 with 71 respondents from 191 populations. The participants were defined as family members living in the same household as patients with hypertension. Data were collected using a stroke initial assessment questionnaire based on the FAST technique. Analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with α = 0,05. Results: Before the intervention, 38 respondents (53,5%) had moderate knowledge, 26 (36,6%) had poor knowledge, and 7 (9,9%) had good knowledge. After the intervention, 39 respondents (54.9%) had good knowledge, 29 (40,8%) had moderate knowledge, and 3 (4,2%) had poor knowledge. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.001 (p<0,05), indicating significant difference in knowledge before and after intervention. Conclusion: Education on the FAST initial stroke assessment using audiovisual media increases the knowledge of families of patients with hypertension and can support the early recognition of stroke symptoms. Suggestions: Puskesmas is expected to optimize health education programs regarding initial stroke assessment by regularly utilizing audiovisual materials as an effective method for conveying information.
