Abstract
High fashion orientation and need for social approval among late adolescents have the potential to influence their self-esteem. This quantitative study used accidental sampling involving 103 active undergraduate students aged 18-21 years to determine the role of need for social approval and fashion orientation on self-esteem in late adolescents. Data were collected online using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), an adapted Attention to Social Comparison Information Scale (ATSCI), and a researcher-constructed fashion orientation scale developed through face validity (expert judgment) and tested for reliability across three tryout rounds, yielding a stable reliability coefficient (R= 0.894). Regression analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistic 22. Results showed that need for social approval independently did not have a significant role on self-esteem (sig. coefficients= 0.063), while fashion orientation had a significant role (sig. coefficients= 0.012). When tested together, both variables were significant (sig. regression= 0.029) with a contribution of 6.8% (R Square= 0.068). It can be concluded that late adolescents' self-esteem is more influenced by fashion orientation as a form of self-expression than by need for social approval alone, so future research is recommended to position need for social approval as a mediating variable rather than an independent predictor.
