Abstract
Background: Musi River water contaminated with heavy metals has the potential to disrupt the hematological system of coastal communities, especially the process of hemoglobin formation. This study aims to analyze the relationship between iron and cadmium contamination in river water and hemoglobin levels in the blood Method: The type of research used was observational analysis, using a non-probability design. The water sample research was carried out in Merah Mata Village, Banyuasin District 1 RT 03 and for blood sample research at the Hematology Laboratory, Faculty of Health Sciences, Musi Charitas Catholic University. The research subjects consisted of 39 water collection points with 39 with information (29 residents' house reservoirs and 10 in the Musi River water), and 39 female respondents aged 20–65 years old sampling was carried out using purposive sampling techniques. The data analysis used was the kendall tau test. Results: The iron test water sample obtained a measured average result of 0.14 mg/L, an average of cadmium 0 mg/L, and an average hemoglobin level of 12.63 g/dL. The results of the kendall tau test showed that there was no relationship between iron and hemoglobin p = 0.646 > 0.05, and there could be no relationship with cadmium with hemoglobin p = - because there was no variation in the results of the study data. Conclusion: Based on this study, exposure to iron and cadmium in Musi River water is still in the safe category or within normal thresholds, and has no relationship with hemoglobin levels in the blood. Suggestion: Researchers are further recommended to use more precise laboratory analysis methods, such as AAS or ICP for more accurate results. Advanced researchers can make a connection between iron levels or cadmium levels in the blood and hemoglobin levels.
