Abstract
Background: Smoking is a risk factor for kidney dysfunction due to exposure to nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, and free radicals, which induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and glomerular damage. Passive smokers may also experience similar effects from secondhand smoke. Kidney function is assessed using the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), calculated from serum creatinine with the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. Objective : To compare eGFR values between active and passive smokers. Methods : A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 70 participants, including 35 active smokers and 35 passive smokers. Serum creatinine was measured using an enzymatic method with the BioSystem BA-200 Analyzer, and eGFR was calculated using the CKD-EPI equation. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). Results : The median eGFR was 85.78 mL/min/1.73 m² in active smokers and 84.58 mL/min/1.73 m² in passive smokers. The Wilcoxon test showed no significant difference between groups (p = 0.857). Conclusion : There was no significant difference in eGFR between active and passive smokers. Both active and passive cigarette smoke exposure showed no significant effect on kidney filtration function as assessed by eGFR. Suggestion : Further research with a larger sample size, while considering factors such as a smoking duration of more than 10 years, smoking intensity, and participants aged over 30 years, is recommended to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between cigarette smoke exposure and kidney function.
