Abstract

The traditional process of stripping coconut husks requires quite a lot of physical effort and takes a long time, so that efficiency in coconut processing is hampered. Therefore, the development of an effective and efficient coconut peeling tool is very necessary. This research aims to redesign a coconut peeler by relying on a driving motor as the main power source. The method used in designing this tool is Quality Function Deployment (QFD), which focuses on translating consumer needs into technical specifications that can be applied in product design. The QFD process begins by identifying consumer needs through surveys and interviews, which are then translated into design characteristics that must be met by the peeler. Based on the analysis results, several important features identified include stripping efficiency, safety of use, ease of maintenance, and tool durability. The redesign of this tool includes improvements to the stripping mechanism by integrating an electric motor as the main driver, as well as improvements to the ergonomic design to make it easier for users to operate the tool. Preliminary trial results show that the redesigned coconut peeling tool is able to increase work efficiency and reduce peeling time significantly compared to manual methods. Thus, it is hoped that the use of this tool can support increased productivity in the coconut processing industry and reduce the workload of workers.
