Abstract

The development of communication technology has given rise to the phenomenon of phubbing, a behavior of ignoring a conversation partner due to excessive focus on a smartphone, which is thought to be related to the loneliness experienced by an individual. This study aimed to determine the relationship between loneliness and phubbing behavior in late adolescents. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research sample consisted of 71 active students of Universitas Katolik Musi Charitas aged 18–21 years, selected using incidental sampling technique. Data were collected using a Loneliness Scale adapted from the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 (Russell, 1996) and a Phubbing Scale adapted from the Phubbing Scale (Karadağ et al., 2015). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.739 with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant and strong positive relationship between loneliness and phubbing behavior in late adolescents. The higher the level of loneliness experienced, the higher the tendency toward phubbing behavior, and vice versa. Thus, the research hypothesis was accepted.
