Abstract
Background: Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) is a platelet index parameter used to assess the average size of platelets in the blood. MPV values can be affected by delays in sample analysis. The pre-analytical phase accounts for the highest proportion of laboratory testing errors, ranging from 46% to 68.2%, one of which is delayed sample analysis. Delays in testing may cause platelet swelling, which can lead to an increase in MPV values. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the difference in Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) values between blood samples analyzed immediately and those analyzed after a 20-minute delay. Methods: This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at the Haematology Laboratory, Faculty of Health Sciences, Musi Charitas Catholic University. The sample consisted of 47 participants aged 18–23 years. Sampling was conducted using non-probability sampling. Data analysis was performed using the paired t-test with a 95% confidence interval. Results: The mean MPV value of the immediately processed blood samples was 8.51 fL, while that of the samples measured after a 20-minute delay was 8.76 fL. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant difference in MPV test results between samples examined immediately and those examined after a 20-minute delay, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Suggestion: Further studies are recommended to evaluate differences in MPV values at shorter delay intervals and to assess the effects of temperature during the delay period.
