Abstract

Background: The total bilirubin test aims to determine the function of the liver in excretion and conjugation processes. Bilirubin is very sensitive to light, temperature and time delays. The pre-analytical stage plays an important role because at this stage it can account for errors in the laboratory around 46-77%. The delay in the examination occurred due to the large number of samples and the limitations of the equipment, potentially causing changes in bilirubin levels which had an impact on the inaccuracy of laboratory test results. Objective: To determine the total bilirubin levels in serum immediately checked and suspended for 15 minutes at room temperature of 20-25°C. Methods: This type of study was experimental with a cross sectional research design.The research was conducted at Balai Besar Laboratorium Kesehatan Masyarakat Palembang (BBLKM). The research subjects used were 39 people. Sampling was carried out by total sampling technique. The data analysis used was the Paired Sample T-Test with a 95% confidence level. Results: The average total bilirubin level was checked immediately at 0.59 mg/dL while the average total bilirubin level was delayed for 15 minutes by 0.57% mg/dL. Conclusions: There no a significant difference in total bilirubin levels that were immediately checked and delayed for 15 minutes p = 0.580 (> 0.05) Suggestion: Further studies are recommended to use different examination methods, consider other variables such as light exposure, time and temperature.
