Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by physical, psychological, and social changes that may affect the ability to regulate emotions. The quality of the parent-child relationship plays an important role in helping adolescents manage their emotions adaptively. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the quality of the parent-child relationship and emotion regulation among adolescents in junior high schools in Palembang City. Method: This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of junior high school students in Palembang City, selected using a total sampling technique. A total of 66 respondents met the study criteria. Data were collected using the Parent-Child Relationship Quality Questionnaire and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with Kendall's Tau-b correlation test. Results: Among the 66 respondents, the quality of the parent-child relationship was categorized as high in 40 respondents (60.6%), moderate in 21 respondents (31.8%), and low in 5 respondents (7.6%). Emotion regulation was categorized as high in 39 respondents (59.1%), moderate in 21 respondents (31.8%), and low in 6 respondents (9.1%). The results of the bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between the quality of the parent-child relationship and emotion regulation among adolescents (p-value = 0.0001; p < 0.05), with a correlation coefficient of τ = 0.945, indicating a very strong positive relationship. Conclusion:There was a significant relationship between the quality of parentchild relationships and emotional regulation in adolescents at Palembang Junior High School. The better the quality of the parent-child relationship, the better the adolescent's ability to regulate emotions. Suggestions: Parents are expected to improve open communication, provide emotional support, attention, and involvement in the child's life to help improve adolescents' emotional regulation skills. Schools can also develop counseling and education programs that involve families to support students' emotional development.
