Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder affecting a patient's perception, thought processes, emotions, and social behavior. Anxiety is a frequently occurring associated symptom; if left untreated, it can exacerbate positive symptoms and increase the risk of relapse. Non-pharmacological management using Mandala Art Therapy (an art therapy involving symmetrical geometric circular patterns) can foster focused attention and stimulate relaxation to lower sympathetic nervous system activity, thereby effectively reducing anxiety in schizophrenic patients. Objective: To identify the effect of Mandala Art Therapy on reducing anxiety levels in schizophrenic patients at Yayasan Bagus Mandiri Insani, Palembang. Methods: This study employed a quantitative case study design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. Participants consisted of schizophrenic patients meeting the inclusion criteria. The intervention involved coloring mandala images over three consecutive days, with each session lasting 30 minutes. Data collection instruments included clinical observation sheets and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire to measure patients' anxiety levels before and after the intervention. Results: On the first day, the average anxiety score decreased from 37.6 (pre) to 22.8 (post). On the second day, the average anxiety score decreased from 39.2 (pre) to 21.2 (post). Subsequently, on the third day, the average anxiety score decreased from 38.4 (pre) to 21 (post). Conclusion: The application of Mandala Art Therapy proved effective in positively influencing the reduction of anxiety levels in schizophrenic patients. It is recommended that this complementary therapy be implemented by nurses and rehabilitation facilities or foundations as a structured, non-pharmacological psychiatric nursing intervention for individuals with mental disorders.
