Abstract
Background: The aging process in older adults triggers a decline in neurological function, particularly short-term memory, due to reduced dopamine secretion and nerve impulse transmission in the brain. A non-pharmacological intervention to stimulate cognitive function is Congklak play therapy. Objective: Analysis of the effectiveness of implementing comprehensive gerontic nursing care through modification of high-frequency congklak play therapy interventions on short-term memory function in the elderly. Methods: This research design is a descriptive case study conducted on three elderly people (Mrs. A, Mr. R, and Mrs. S) with memory impairment, who live at the Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home in Palembang. The intervention consisted of a modification of traditional high-intensity congklak play therapy (two 15-minute sessions per day for three consecutive days). Cognitive function was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the intervention. Results: The final assessment showed an increase in MMSE scores for all participants after the intervention. Mrs. A's score increased from 20 (Moderate) to 25 (Mild), Mr. R's score from 23 (Mild) to 26 (Mild), and Mrs. S's score from 11 (Moderate) to 15 (Moderate). The overall average MMSE score increased by 4.0 points. Conclusion: The application of high-frequency modification of congklak play therapy has been proven effective in improving short-term memory capacity in elderly people with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. Suggestion: Implement congklak therapy into the weekly routine of the Nursing Home. Keywords: Elderly, Short Term Memory, Congklak Playing Therapy.
