Abstract

Background: The increase in the elderly population is accompanied by the natural aging process, which triggers cognitive decline. Cognitive impairment is characterized by memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and impaired orientation to time and place, which can lead to severe dementia, resulting in a decreased ability to perform daily activities. One non-pharmacological approach to improving cognitive function in the elderly is image matching therapy, which stimulates memory. Objective: Implementing gerontic nursing care through picture matching therapy to improve cognitive function in the elderly at the Dharma Bhakti Palembang Nursing Home. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study design on three elderly people with cognitive impairment at the Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home in Palembang. The picture matching therapy intervention was conducted for three consecutive days. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) pre-post intervention instrument. Results: The results showed an increase in MMSE scores in all respondents. Mrs. L's MMSE score increased from 19 to 22, Mrs. I's increased from 19 to 21, and Mrs. C's increased from 18 to 20. After the intervention, with an average increase of 2-3 points, and aspects that experienced improvement were orientation, registration, and recall. Conclusion: Picture-matching therapy is effective in improving cognitive function in older adults. This therapy can be used as a simple, easy-to-implement, and beneficial non-pharmacological intervention to stimulate memory in older adults. Recommendation: Nurses at nursing homes are advised to make picture matching therapy a routine activity carried out every morning before other daily activities in order to maintain and improve the cognitive function of the elderly.
