Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common complication among patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis and may increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is Isometric Handgrip Exercise. Objective: To analyze the implementation of Isometric Handgrip Exercise in controlling blood pressure among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This study employed a case study design involving three CKD patients with hypertension. The intervention was conducted over three consecutive hemodialysis sessions. Blood pressure was measured 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the exercise in each session. Results: The mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 171 to 165.33 mmHg, 173 to 169 mmHg, and 167.67 to 165.67 mmHg across the three sessions. The mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 88 to 85 mmHg, 91 to 88.33 mmHg, and 90.67 to 87.67 mmHg, respectively. Conclusion: Isometric Handgrip Exercise demonstrated a tendency to help control and reduce blood pressure in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Recommendation: Isometric Handgrip Exercise may be considered as an adjunctive non-pharmacological nursing intervention to assist in blood pressure control among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis.
