Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a condition characterized by increased blood pressure with systolic values ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic values ≥90 mmHg, which often does not cause noticeable symptoms and is therefore known as the silent killer. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to complications in vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes. The longer a person suffers from hypertension, the greater the risk of organ damage. In addition, patients’ attitudes toward their illness also influence their behavior in preventing complications. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the length of suffering and attitudes towards efforts to prevent complications in hypertension sufferers. Method: This study used a quantitative method, a descriptive correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. The population was 55 respondents. The data collection process was carried out individually according to patients who came for treatment at the Padang Community Health Center on Tuesday. The measurement instrument used a questionnaire on attitudes and prevention efforts in hypertension patients. Data were analyzed univariately using a frequency distribution test, and bivariate analysis using Kendall's tau-b test with a significance value of 5%. Results: Most respondents were aged 30–59 years and were female, totaling 41 respondents 74.5%, while males totaled 14 respondents 25.5%. The majority of respondents had suffered from hypertension for a short duration of 1–5 years 63.6%. The results showed that there was no relationship between duration of suffering from hypertension and complication prevention efforts p=0.287; τ = 0.137. However, there was a relationship between attitude and complication prevention efforts p=0.008; τ = 0.353. Suggestion: It is recommended to improve educational and assistance programs for hypertensive patients, particularly in enhancing attitudes and efforts to prevent complications.
