Abstract

Background: Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory problem with a high prevalence and has a significant impact on patients' quality of life. One of the main problems in both of these conditions is ineffective breathing patterns due to chronic hyperventilation. Buteyko's breathing technique is an effective nonpharmacological intervention to reduce hyperventilation, improve ventilation efficiency, and improve respiratory symptoms. Objective: To describe the application of Buteyko breathing exercises in the nursing care of adult patients with respiratory disorders at Charitas Hospital Palembang. Methods: Case studies with a nursing care approach include assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The main intervention was in the form of Buteyko breathing exercises as evidence-based practice (EBP). Conclusion: The application of the Buteyko breathing exercise has been proven to help reduce the level of dyspnea in patients. The respiratory rate (RR) in all three patients decreased from a range of 24–28 breaths per minute to a more controlled level approaching normal values. The MMRC scale in the three patients decreased from scale 3 to scale 1. Respiratory disorders and signs of airway obstruction such as wheezing and ineffective cough also improved. In addition, patients’ tolerance after physical activity improved, along with an increased ability to perform daily activities. This intervention is easy to apply, does not require any equipment, and is effective as an adjunct therapy in the management of both asthma and COPD. Suggestion: Nurses are advised to integrate Buteyko breathing exercises into routine nursing care for patients with respiratory system disorders to improve clinical outcomes and patient quality of life.
