Abstract

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) requires long-term medical care to prevent complications. Family support plays a crucial role in increasing motivation, medication adherence, and patients' ability to cope with stress. Through family support, patients can develop more adaptive coping strategies and thus better manage their treatment. However, some patients still receive low or suboptimal family support. This lack of family support can impact patients' psychological well-being, reduce motivation to undergo treatment, and make them more susceptible to maladaptive coping strategies. This is one of the reasons researchers conducted a study on the relationship between family support and coping strategies in diabetes mellitus patients. Objective : To determine the relationship between family support and medication adherence and coping in patient with diabetes melitus. Methods : This study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The research sample consisted of 55 respondents, selected using a puposive sampling technique. The research instruments were questionnaires on family support and medication adherence. Bivariate data analysis was conducted using the Kendall’s tau-b test. Result : The results of the study ranged from 38 to 80 years, the majority of respondents suffered from DM for less than 5 years, as many as 54 respondents. Family support, obtained a correlation value of 0.364 with a p-value of 0.121 <0.05, which means Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected, adherence to medication, coping obtained a correlation coefficient value of 0.564 with a p-value of 0.078 (p> 0.05) The results of the Kendall's tau-b test showed a relationship between family support and adherence to medication (p-value = 0.121) and the relationship between family support and coping (p-value 0.078). Conclusion : There is no significant relationship between family support an medication adherence, and there is no significant relationship between family support an coping Suggestion: It is hoped that patients will receive family support, so that patients comply with treatment and have adaptive coping.
