Abstract
Background: Internet addiction is a compulsive behavior involving social media, gaming, or online gambling that negatively impacts physical and mental health. In adolescents, this addiction reduces academic productivity, leads to social isolation, and increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and even becoming a target for cybercrime due to exposure to misinformation and a crisis of self-validation. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between internet addiction and anxiety in adolescents. Methods: This study uses a quantitative method with descriptive correlation using a Cross Sectional approach. The study population was all students of grades VII, VIII, and IX of SMP Sultan Mahmud Badarudin Palembang, totaling 104 students, with a sample size of 62 obtained through a total sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a social media addiction questionnaire adapted from the Internet Addiction Test and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) questionnaire. Furthermore, the data were analyzed univariately (frequency distribution test), and bivariate analysis (using Kendall's tau-b test). Result: Most internet user respondents were aged 12 to 17 years old with a median score of 13.50 and were female (33 respondents (53.2%) and male (29 respondents (46.8%). The results of the analysis of the relationship between internet addiction and overall anxiety were obtained (p = 0.003). There is a significant relationship between internet addiction and anxiety in adolescents, but there is a moderate positive trend where the lower the level of internet addiction, the lower the level of anxiety. Suggestion:It is hoped that teenagers can use the internet for positive, useful things and not excessively, so that internet addiction does not occur which triggers anxiety. Key Words: Anxiety, Internet Addiction, Adolescent
