Abstract
Background : The respiratory system plays a vital role in the body. Under certain conditions, it can become compromised, causing secretion buildup and obstructed airflow, leading to impaired gas exchange. This buildup of secretions leads to ineffective airway clearance, which can lead to airway obstruction, decreased oxygen saturation, atelectasis, and secondary infections. Proper treatment of ineffective airway clearance is crucial to maintain optimal gas exchange, one approach being nebulizer inhalation therapy. Nebulizer inhalation therapy can dilate the bronchi, thin secretions, and moisturize the airways. All of these effects facilitate coughing and expel mucus from the airways, thus supporting physiological and mechanical airway clearance. Purpose : To identify the impact of administering nebulizer inhalation therapy on respiratory frequency and oxygen saturation levels in patients experiencing ineffective airway clearance before and after administering nebulizer inhalation therapy. Methods : This case study uses a descriptive method with a one group pretest posttest design approach conducted on 3 patients with ineffective airway clearance nursing problems with the application of nebulizer inhalation therapy. Result : After three days of nebulizer inhalation therapy, administered three to four times daily for 15 to 20 minutes, the results for the three patients showed normal respiratory rates and oxygen saturation (SpO₂). After to nebulizer inhalation therapy, the respiratory rate (RR) of the three patients was between 19 and 22 beats per minute, and the SpO₂ level was between 95 and 97%. Suggestion : It is hoped that the results of this case study can improve the quality of nursing care and become the basis for preparing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for nebulizer inhalation therapy at Charitas Hospital Palembang.
