Abstract
Background: One of the common problems experienced by stroke patients is damage to the autonomic nervous system that regulates intestinal peristalsis. This condition leads to a decreased defecation reflex and results in constipation. If constipation is not managed properly, it can negatively affect the quality of life of stroke patients. Constipation management can be performed using pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. One non-pharmacological intervention is abdominal massage. Abdominal massage can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, increase gastrointestinal motility, reduce abdominal muscle tension, and provide a relaxation effect on the sphincter Purpose: To analyze nursing care for patients with neurological disorders, specifically cerebrovascular disease (CVD), through the application of abdominal massage to reduce constipation. Methods: This study used a case study design involving three respondents who experienced constipation for ≥72 hours. Abdominal massage was administered once daily for 10–15 minutes over three consecutive days. Constipation severity was assessed using the Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS). Results: Among the three respondents, one was able to defecate without pharmacological assistance, while two respondents were not able to fully resolve constipation. Although the results were not statistically significant, clinically abdominal massage provided benefits, including reduced abdominal bloating, increased comfort, improved gas elimination, enhanced intestinal peristalsis, and decreased CAS scores. Conclusion: Abdominal massage was not significantly effective in resolving constipation in stroke patients. Recommendation: Nurses are encouraged to apply abdominal massage as a complementary non-pharmacological therapy for stroke patients experiencing constipation
