Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children is a growing health problem that has serious impacts on children’s growth, development, and quality of life. One of the contributing factors to the increasing incidence of CKD among children aged 4–14 years is parents’ lack of knowledge regarding risk factors, early signs, and preventive measures of CKD. Therefore, health education for parents is an important strategy for the early prevention of CKD in children. Objective: This study aimed to determine the difference in parents’ knowledge before and after receiving health education on the prevention of chronic kidney disease in children aged 4–14 years. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 30 parents who had children aged 4–14 years, selected using a insidental sampling technique in RW 07, Sukarami Subdistrict, Sukarami District, Palembang. The research instrument was a questionnaire measuring knowledge about the prevention of CKD. Data analysis was conducted using univariate analysis with frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The mean age of respondents was 42.50 years with a standard deviation of 10.966. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a p-value of < 0.001. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in parents’ knowledge before and after receiving health education on the prevention of CKD in children aged 4–14 years. Suggestion: Parents are expected to implement early preventive measures for CKD in children.
