Abstract
Background: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder experienced by adolescents due to irregular sleep patterns, excessive gadget use, academic stress, and poor implementation of sleep hygiene. This condition can decrease learning concentration, affect emotional stability, and increase the risk of physical and mental health problems. Sleep hygiene education serves as an effective non-pharmacological intervention to improve adolescents’ understanding of healthy sleep habits in order to prevent insomnia. Objective: To determine the differences in knowledge before and after sleep hygiene education as an insomnia prevention measure among high school adolescents. Methods: The study used a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 65 respondents selected using a total sampling technique. The research instrument was a sleep hygiene knowledge questionnaire. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The majority of respondents were 16–17 years old and male (52.3%). Before the education, most had low knowledge (50.8%). After the education, the majority had good knowledge (90.8%). The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value < 0.05, indicating a significant difference before and after the education. Recommendation : There is a significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the provision of sleep hygiene education among adolescents. Suggestion: Sleep hygiene education can be utilized as an independent nursing intervention and as a school-based health education program to help prevent insomnia among adolescents.
