Abstract

Background : Pre-school children are individuals aged 3-6 years. Congenital abnormalities and external factors resulted in the child undergoing hospital treatment and surgery. The operation caused the child to experience post-operative pain. Unresolved pain can cause physical, psychological and physiological responses in children, thereby hindering the recovery process. The role of nurses in providing post-operative pain management nursing care minimises the impact of trauma on children faced with the challenges of the process from assessment to the provision of post-operative pain management interventions. Objective : The purpose of this research is to explore and analyse nurses' experiences in pain management in pre-school children who undergo post-operative care in hospitals. Methods : Using qualitative methods, a phenomenological study approach, purposive sampling, in-depth interviews with nurses who had worked for at least three years in the children's ward, and data analysis using the Colaizzi method. Result : This study identified 10 themes, namely nurses' understanding of pain, children's response to pain, pain scales used to assess pain, pain management to address pain, effective non-pharmacological measures to reduce pain, support and facilities for implementing non-pharmacological pain management, children's response and attitude after being given non-pharmacological post-operative pain management therapy, barriers to the implementation of pain management, efforts to overcome barriers to the implementation of pain management, and nurses' skills and attitudes in providing pain management. Suggestion : Improve communication skills and abilities when interacting with children and families receiving care, taking into account the concepts of pediatric nursing philosophy. Key Words : Pre-school children, post-operative pain management.
