Abstract

Background : The process of hospitalization in children can trigger anxiety responses because children are not yet able to adapt to a new environment. If this condition is not properly managed, it may affect the duration of the healing process and cause long-term psychological disturbances. Coloring therapy can be used as an intervention to reduce anxiety in hospitalized children. The benefits of coloring therapy include stimulating imagination and creativity, helping children focus on specific objects, establishing boundary lines within images, and developing fine motor skills. Objective : To determine the anxiety levels of children aged 5–6 years before and after the implementation of coloring therapy. Methods : This study employed a quantitative research approach with a pre–post-test one-group design. The data collection technique used total sampling, involving 32 respondents. Anxiety levels were measured using the Face Anxiety Scale through observation. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Result : Univariate analysis showed that the majority of respondents were male (21 respondents; 65.6%), aged 5 years (17 respondents; 53.1%), with parents having higher education (16 respondents; 50.0%) and senior high school education (16 respondents; 50.0%). Most parents worked in the private sector (14 respondents; 43.8%). Before coloring therapy, the majority of children experienced moderate anxiety (16 respondents; 50.0%). After the coloring therapy intervention, most children were not anxious (25 respondents; 78.1%). Bivariate analysis indicated a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after coloring therapy, with a p-value < 0.001. Conclusion : There is a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the implementation of coloring therapy. Suggestion : Hospital management and nurses need to enhance innovation in addressing anxiety among hospitalized children. Key Words : Anxiety, Children aged 5–6 years, Coloring Therapy.
