Abstract

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. This disease requires a long treatment time, that requires patient commitment in drug compliance. Adherence to treatment is the key to success in reducing the incidence of tuberculosis. One of the efforts to taking medication is through the provision of supportive education with stages of education, teaching, and guiding. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of supportive education on adherence to tuberculosis medication. Method: Quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest approach with control group. Random sampling technique obtained 39 respondents who were divided into two : intervention groups and the control groups. The research instrument used the MMAS-8 questionnaire and univariate and bivariate data with Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Research Results: The average age is 41 years. The highest gender is female, with 23 people (59.0%), most of the secondary education level 20 people (51.3%), and the leng of treatment is dominated by the advanced phase, 30 people (76.9%). Wilcoxon test ontained a p-value of 0.021 (p<0.05) in the intervention group and a p-value of 0.08 (>0.05) in the control group. Mann-Whitney test obtained a p-value of 0.001 (p< 0.05). Conclusion: There is a difference in medication adherence before and after supportive education in the intervention group (p-value 0.021);there is no difference in medication adherence before and after supportive education in the control group (p-value 0.08), and there is a difference in medication adherence after supportive education in the intervention and control groups (p-value 0.001). Suggestion: Health services should to provide supportive education to tuberculosis patients to improve medication adherence.
