Abstract

Background: The process of adapting to the environment and new people can make students experience anxiety. Anxiety has a positive impact if it is still at a mild level, if it is at a severe level or panic, it will have a bad impact on a person where it can make them lose control of themselves. One of the factors that affect anxiety is the coping mechanism. The coping mechanism is an effort made by a person to face problems, one of the factors that form the coping mechanism is the family, where the family has a role to support every process of development and growth of its family members. Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between family support and coping mechanisms with anxiety in first-year students in Palembang Methods: The methods used were quantitative descriptive using a correlation design with a cross-sectional approach, data collection using a total sampling technique and obtaining 94 respondents who met the criteria, data analysis using Kendal tau-b Results: The results of the correlation between family support and anxiety were obtained (p= 0.023), so there was a significant relationship. The correlation of the coping mechanism with anxiety was obtained (p= 0.013), so there was a significant relationship. The correlation of family support with the coping mechanism was obtained (p= 0.001) so that there was a significant relationship. Conclusion: There is a relationship between family support and anxiety, coping mechanism with anxiety, and family support with coping mechanism. Suggestion: Respondents are expected to further improve communication with their families, in order to reduce the anxiety experienced, as well as to form a better coping mechanism, because there are still some respondents who have maladaptive coping mechanisms.
