Abstract
This research aims to describe the essay writing literacy skills of fifth grade students at SD Xaverius 9 Palembang based on gender. In this research, descriptive qualitative research methods were used. The population of this study was 80 students. The research sample was 40 students using random sampling techniques. Data collection techniques use interviews, observation, documentation and tests. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results of the research were to describe the writing structure of female research subjects with scores of 90-100 as many as 34% (5 students). The writing technique assessment of female research subjects scored 90-100 as much as 48% (3 students). The diction assessment of female research subjects scored 100 as much as 100% (4 students). The assessment of the writing structure of male research subjects scored 90-100 as much as 28% (3 students). The writing technique assessment of male research subjects scored 90-100 as much as 28% (2 students). The diction assessment of the research subjects was 100% (3 students). The implication of this research in the world of education is that it helps develop students' abilities in critical thinking.
