Abstract
Background : Independence is an attitude and behavior of each individual that describes a person's activities leading independently without help from others. The independence of one behavior needs to be instilled in children from an early age. By instilling independence in children, their spoiled traits will tend to be less dependent on their daily activities. If the child is able to carry out daily activities without help from others, can take his own food and use a spoon correctly, the child is said to be independent. Purpose : This study aims to identify the description of the level of independence in the ability to carry out daily activities in mentally retarded children. Methods : The research method used is a descriptive survey with a qualitative research type. The sampling technique in this study used total sampling with 36 respondents according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result : The results showed that most of the sexes were male 21(58.3%), 17(47.2%) mentally retarded children aged 12-16 years, 22(61.1%) mentally retarded children's education, 22(61.1%) occupations 16(44.4%) IRT parents, 15(41.7%) high school parents, and 24(66.7%) independent mentally retarded children. Suggestion : Parents improve the independence of mentally retarded children even better and do not need help from other people in carrying out their daily activities.
