Abstract

This study aims to determine the speed reading ability of grade V students of SD Xaverius 9 Palembang. Speed reading is reading that is done quickly without neglecting reading comprehension. This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects in this study were class V numbering 28 consisting of 15 male students and 13 female students. The data collection technique in this study was to conduct a speed reading test calculated using a stopwatch. Data analysis techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or vertification. The result of this study is that the average ability of all grade V students of SD Xaverius 9 Palembang has medium criteria with a reading speed of 100-150 kpm. Students who read it more slowly tend to have difficulty reading because there is a combination of consonants and there are some students using aids when reading in the form of pens, pencils, and fingers. This is because students mark reading texts to make it easier for students to read. Keywords: Speed Reading, ability, descriptive qualitative, test
