Abstract
This research aims to investigate the use of audio-visual media (AVM) in learning English which focuses on describing its benefits, challenges, and solutions. This research used a qualitative approach in terms of descriptive design. It involved fifty-eighth graders and two English teachers of a private Junior High School in Palembang that were selected through simple random sampling. The instruments of this study are questionnaires and interviews. The data of this research were analyzed by using the Miles et al. technique which covers data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion. This study revealed that the use of AVM improved the student’s understanding of the materials and enhanced their reading, listening, writing, and speaking (basic) skills. The media also facilitated teachers in delivering English materials. However, limited English skills and competence caused problems for the students. In addition, topic and content adjustment led to challenges for the teachers. Therefore, preventive solutions were highly required to solve the problems, such as using others' learning resources and communicating the problems. It is expected that AVMs are continuously used to support English teaching and learning activities. Keywords: Audio-visual, Learning English, Benefits, Challenges, and Solutions
