Abstract
People throughout the world utilize English as an international language. One of the most important skills in English is reading. Extrinsic motivation is an impulse that arises in human to do something with a specific purpose. The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between students' extrinsic reading motivation and reading comprehension in a senior high school Palembang. Quantitative research methods were used through a correlational study. The data was collected by using extrinsic motivation questionnaire and reading comprehension test. Ninety-eight students were involved in the study. They were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The result of extrinsic motivation questionnaire and reading comprehension test were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment. There was correlation between extrinsic reading motivation and student reading comprehension and the level of reading comprehension of tenth graders is at the instructional reading level. The implications of this research for English education are to be references for future researcher and English teacher expected not only focus on lesson but also focus on motivation to make them enjoy in English learning at School to achieve academic success.
