Abstract

Background : Adolescence is a transitional phase marked by physical, psychological, emotional, and social changes, making adolescents more vulnerable to mental health problems. Poor mental health can lead to anxiety, depression, and decreased motivation to study, while good mental health supports adolescents in coping with life's pressures and developing their potential. Mental health is influenced by external factors, parenting styles, and internal factors such as self-efficacy, so understanding the relationship between the two is important for supporting adolescents' psychological well-being. Objective : To examine the relationship between parenting styles and self-efficacy with adolescent mental health at SMK Swakarya Palembang. Methods : This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 163 respondents were selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-square test and Kendall’s tau-b test. Result : The average age of respondents was 16 years old, female (57.1%), parents with high school education (56.4%), democratic parenting style (59.5%), low self-efficacy (88.6%), and poor mental health (58.9%). The chi-square test results showed no relationship between parenting styles and adolescent mental health (p-value=0.664). Kendall's tau-b test results showed no significant relationship between self-efficacy and adolescent mental health (p-value=0.118). Suggestion : This study is expected to provide input for schools to improve students' mental health and self-efficacy through guidance and counseling services, self-development activities, and cooperation with parents through activities such as seminars or parenting classes for parents to encourage better parenting practices.
