Abstract
Background: Mental disorders represent maladaptive responses to internal and external stressors that disrupt cognition, emotion, behavior, and social, occupational, and physical functioning. One manifestation is the risk of violent behavior, actions that may harm the self, others, or the environment, characterized by verbal threats, aggressive behaviors, and physical signs such as muscle tension and rigid posture. Management requires both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a non-pharmacological technique that reduces muscle tension to induce relaxation, attenuate stress responses, and enhance individuals’ ability to control anger and violent behavior. Objective: To determine nursing care for patients with mental disorders through the implementation of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) to reduce signs and symptoms in patients at risk of violent behavior. Methods: The evidence-based practice (EBP) implementation used a case study with a pre-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design. PMR sessions were administered once daily for three consecutive days, each session lasting 25–30 minutes. Results: After three days of PMR intervention (25–30 minutes per session), reductions in signs and symptoms of risk for violent behavior were observed: Client 1 decreased from 9 (64.2%) signs/symptoms to 1; Client 2 (14.3%) decreased from 7(50%) to 1(7.14%); and Client 3 decreased from 6 (42.8%) to 1(7.14%).. Suggestion: The intervention may provide new practical knowledge to assist in managing violent behavior and in reducing the signs and symptoms associated with risk for violent behavior.
