Abstract
Background : Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease and is nicknamed the "silent killer." One non-pharmacological prevention method is physical exercise, including isometric handgrip exercises. Isometric handgrip exercises are effective in lowering blood pressure. Research Purpose : To determine the difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure values before and after performing isometric handgrip movements. Methods : This study used a quantitative, pre-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Sampling was carried out by measuring blood pressure before and after the intervention. Total sampling was used. The sample size was 32 respondents. Bivariate analysis used a paired t-test. Results : The average systolic blood pressure before isometric handgrip exercises was 148.06 mmHg and after isometric handgrip exercises was 140.25 mmHg. Meanwhile, diastolic blood pressure before isometric handgrip exercise was 81.41 mmHg and after isometric handgrip exercise was 78.84 mmHg, with a p-value of 0.000.. Conclusion : here was a difference in blood pressure before and after isometric handgrip exercise. Suggestion : Isometric handgrip exercise is a non-pharmacological therapy for patients with hypertension.
