Abstract
Background: Elderly people can experience mental changes that can affect their thinking ability and stress levels. Mental health issues in the elderly include forgetfulness and difficulty recognizing time and place. Stress in the elderly, caused by physical decline, chronic illness, memory impairment, and the loss of loved ones, can impact their quality of life. Objective: To analyze the relationship between cognitive function and stress and quality of life in elderly residents of nursing homes. Methods: This study used a quantitative, descriptive correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 45 individuals was selected using a total sampling technique. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini Mental State Examination, stress was measured using the Percieved Stress Scale, and quality of life was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life. Data collection was conducted door-to-door to each residence at the Indralaya Nursing Home. Data were analyzed using Kendal's tau-b test. Results: Univariate analysis of 45 respondents showed a frequency distribution of 69 years on average, 25 were female, 20 (44.4%) had normal cognitive function, 34 (75.6%) had moderate stress, and 31 (68.9%) had moderate quality of life. Bivariate analysis of cognitive function and quality of life variables showed a p-value of 0.124, with a correlation of r = 0.211. Stress and quality of life variables showed a p-value of 0.923, with a correlation of 0.014. Conclusion: Cognitive function and stress are not related to quality of life in the elderly; therefore, further research is needed to understand other factors that influence quality of life in the elderly. Recommendation: The research site is expected to conduct activities to train cognitive function, stress, and quality of life, such as providing interventions such as puzzle games.
